Question:

Does anyone here commute an hour or more to work?

I have a job interview on Thursday and the job is roughly a 50 minute drive from my house. I live in a rural country town that literally has NO jobs and I have to drive someplace bigger to find a decent job. Is anyone else in this predicament? Gas prices are going to kill me, but it's better than no job. I just want to hear from anyone else who has a long commute and see if they get used to it. It would just make me feel better to hear of other people doing the same.

  1. yes,

  2. I live in NYC and most of us travel close to 1 hour every day (each direction).  Some of my friends take about 1.5 to 2 hours per direction.  I think they are crazy.

Of course it helps that we mostly take the bus or train - so it is mostly just sitting and sleeping on the train.

And yes you get used to it.  One of my friend who used to travel 2 hour (per direction) now works out his house.  But now when he has to go to the city (for work) like once a month, dreads it (the stuff he used to do everyday).  Basically he didn't notice how long the ride was because he was so used to it (for about 15 years).

Maybe if your job turns out to be stable, then you could move closer to work.

    Good Luck...

  3. Heck no. I work on my on schedule and drive to meet people for direct sales. I looove my job!

  4. I drive 1 hour to school in ideal traffic, 1.5 hours if I get caught in rush hour (in one case it took me 5 hours to get home during a nasty snow storm).

You can get used to it. It depends on the hours of your work... If you're going to get caught in rush hour both ways it would really suck.

Wear on the car hurts, gas hurts more. I get oil changes monthly becuase I'm putting on so many miles (actually kms becuase I'm Canadian).

Keep a clean car, turn up the radio, pop the cruise control on, and enjoy the time alone.

  5. Yes Ive been commuting for 3 years now. I live in a suburb of chicago and take the train to get there, ive gotten used to it, especially the ride home where i can read all i want and decompress from the job
