Question:

Does anyone here drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse?

I've been an SUV driver all my life, but now my friend wants to sell her 2003 Eclipse and we're considering trading my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport for her Eclipse.

I'm a bit unsure about it though because I'm so used to driving a high vehicle. Would going from Explorer to Eclipse be a good move?

I could really use the better gas mileage.

  1. i did the same thing and the change is a little different being so clise to the ground but you get used to it quickley. a ror the trade, the other dude dont know what he is talking about. even if it is a GT it will still bet about 30 on the highway. mine does.

  2. stay away from any mitsubishi MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!

  3. You have to realize your needs. Are you by yourself for the most part with no passengers to tag along? Eclipses, no matter what model year, are tiny. They have a seating configuration of 2+2. They aren't made to haul people around. The front seats are snug and the rear seats are only good for little children or a golf bag.

Try driving the Eclipse and see if you like it. It's a different feeling. You don't have that roll when turning around a corner that's found on most SUV's. Gas consumption is better in the Eclipse in general. The GT uses premium fuel though. The GS uses the regular. If you make the switch, you will miss the high seating in the SUV. But as time passes, you'll realize that driving a smaller/lower vehicle is easier than   a hunkering truck.

  4. i drive a 3000gt but i drove an ecplise almost baught it they drive smooth and good

  5. Fords suck...don't go American whatever you do...Eclipses are sweet...why get rid of a good car.

  6. The first step is to drive the car and see if you like it.  I hope you realize how tiny eclipses are inside.  If you regularly have more than 2 or 3 people in the vehicle, forget about the eclipse.  If you like the car and can live with not having ANY room, go for it.

  7. I love my Talon (same as Eclipse) but it is the first gen (90-94) and have way more fun in it than any ford I've owned and I've owned plenty of both fords and mitsus and would take a mitsu any day over a ford.

  8. The older Eclipses are not the greatest of cars, nor do they get great gas mileage.

First make sure the Eclipse is not an Eclipse GT.  An Eclipse GT takes premium gas, and prolly gets only slighly better gas mileage than your Explorer, and its a much smaller car.

And make sure is has low miles.  Also an automatic is better than a manual in these cars, although a manual would get better gas mileage.  The clutches in Mitsubishis wear out quick and tend to shift bad.  And automatic lasts longer and this was during the times Mitsubishi was still offering the 10 year warranty on them (the 10-year warranty does not cover clutches.)

But other than that, if you don't need the Explorer and like driving the Eclipse, go for it.
