I'm just wondering if anyone has a career or does work with animals and animal conservation?

I am in college for environmental biology right now, and that is what I want to do.

I'm just curious what you went to school for, what kind of stuff do you do now, what does your job entail, what did you do when you started out and is it worth it?

  1. well, i don't have a career in animal keeping, but I would like to help them. Some careers are like zoos, which helps andangered animals. Some like sea world, and all those places like that also helps animals. They help animals like for an example, a blind seal, or a sealion with a broken flipper. So lots of those entertainment places don't just entertain, but helps

  2. I do the occasional project; it keeps me from being bored during retirement and the money comes in handy.

I majored in Vertebrate Zoology (Conservation Department) for my B.S., then in Zoology for my M.S. & Ph.D.

I started out in teaching, the usual job for someone educated beyond his intelligence. Then I worked for a company doing the EIS for the state's largest project to date. That led to other projects. See my profile if you're interested.

Usually, my job is divided between going out in all sorts of weather and doing paperwork. Hazards are lacerations, poison ivy, driving nails through my boots, getting soaked to the skin, and coming home covered with ticks (30-odd is my record). The projects are generally to determine what wildlife is on a site, whether the habitat is suitable for any imperilled species, and what the proposed construction would do the the wildlife.

The pay is good when I have a project but there are long periods between projects. Worth it? If I had it all to do over again, I'd probably do the same things I did before. Some people never learn.

  3. I have a degree in zoology and work as a wildlife biologist specializing in ornithology (birds).  I mostly do nest searching and monitoring of endangered birds nests,  as well as bird surveys, herpetology trapping, bat surveys, monitoring of invasive plant removal, some endangered fish work, etc.  After graduating..I did a lot of seasonal work to gain experience and for lots of travel opportunities.  I finally settled down to a full time permanent job two years ago after 7 years of seasonal work.  It was definitely worth it..I LOVE my job and would even do it for free if I was not paid for it!!  I am basically working my dream job and would never want to do anything else.
