  1. I have a 5 year old son that is homeschooled. In my state, he is not mandatory attendance age yet, so I don't *have* to school him yet, but we are working on a few things. He has already learned how to recognize numbers, letters, shapes, colors, etc. And now we are practicing writing those things and learning to read. I haven't gone "gung-ho" with him or anything, but if he expresses interest in things, we work on it. With his older sisters around, he likes to try and learn new things to try to keep up with them, and they enjoy helping him learn new things.

Personally, I would definitely homeschool in your situation. If nothing is being done to stop the bullying now, it will only get worse as time goes on.

ADD: You'd probably want to look into the homeschooling laws for your state to make sure you are in compliance. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, but the laws for each state are different. Check out your state's laws here ... http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/default.as...

  2. Let me ask you a question. If you knew a neighbor, say, a woman from church or someone from down the block, who's husband was punching her and calling her names, would you say she should learn to tough it out, or would you say that she needs to get help and get out of the situation?

If an adult woman is expected to get out of an abusive situation, why not your poor five year old, who has less resources and less experience dealing with bullies and bosses?

I've homeschooled three kids through kindergarten so far, and it's really simple and easy and the best way to build a strong family. As for websites, the only websites I used was http://www.nheri.org for legal information for my state, and then my local school district website for curriculum guides. ours is good because it follows state and federal guidelines for education http://www.norman.k12.ok.us/088/index_fi...

  3. I have homeschooled all of my children including in kindergarten. Then I went back to traditional schooling only to later go back to home schooling. My youngest son was allergic to being in school buildings as since alot of the buildings are older and full of mold. My daughter was a special needs student with learning disabilities and she was made fun of daily to the point of tears.

My oldest son finished the 8th grade in public school with straight F's and went from that to straight A's and B's being home schooled. Online charter schools are considered the same as public schooling. My son graduated an online charter school and now attends University of Dayton ( a private university ) with scholarships.

Home schooling can work for some. The student needs to be self disciplined enough to do the work and care. Generally less work is involved with an online charter school than in a regular public school. You are also able to work at your own pace. k12 will customize your curriculum and make sure you are where you need to be.

This is the school my other children are now attending, They offer kindergarten as well.

Depending on where you live they may be a help, if not, there are online charter schools all over.

They will provide you with the computer, printer, supplies and books that you need as well as teachers and academic advisors. This is the same as a public school but ONLINE at home. It is a great program and easy for the kids to understand and follow

  4. I'm intending to use The Well Trained Mind, which has a section on kinder aged kids, and supplementing it with Steiner philosophy play as well. Basically, at this age, play is way more important than academics. So provide an environment that will encourage him to be interested in reading and maths, and there's no harm in working through some science experiment books for young kids. If he doesn't seem ready for this kind of stuff, play, go out, garden, join a homeschooling group, go to story time at the library or whatever. Obviously he needs some interaction with kids his own age that isn't regimented (swimming lessons are valuable, but not much good for socialising)  but that can be hanging out with his cousins or playing with other kids at the park.

  5. I am currently homeschooling my five year-old. I love it check your state out see what requirements it has. Then go cheap this first year make sure you want to do this. If you are allowed to in your state, go to Sam's and get the "Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills". It cost about $15.00 and is great I am using the first grade book, but you decide if your child can handle it. they also sell it on: www,SchoolSpecialtyPublishing.com  I am changing the curriculum for next year, but this is good.

  6. We homeschool our Kindergartener. She is 5 too. There are some wonderful curriculums that are easy for first timers to do, here are some of my favorites:

Five in a Row (check it out at www.fiveinarow.com) - inexpensive, very gentle, literature based and all planned out for you. You would need to add a math curriculum (try Horizons Math or Saxon) and maybe a phonics curricula too.

The best FREE Phonics Curriculum is at www.starfall.com

K12 online curriculum (you may do this independently or join a charter school in most states to give you professional assistance - if you do this via a charter school it is real public schooling at home, not homeschooling - but as I say it can be done independently). This is a challenging curriculum, and a bit pricey, but you can pay by the month and it is very organized.  this link will get you to the buy direct section of the website: http://www.k12.com/schooling_programs/k1...

Sonlight - a christian curriculum heavy on books - great if you and your child love to read. www.sonlight.com

  7. I homeschooled my son last year in kindergarten and this year as well. My daughter who is in 5th grade had these same issues and about the mid-2nd, we knew we ust couldnt take it anymore. I am still working on self-confidence and self esteem issues with her from the bullying and name-calling that she delt with in the school. We were promised year after year that things would change but the y never did. My hsband and I are very involved and were the room parents but still thes things kept on. I strongly suggest taking him out, no 5-6 year old should have to put up with belittling for 8 hours a day, good grief.

If you were in a job and having to deal with co-workers nagging, pushing you, hitting you, sexually harrassing you, slandering your name, and you had gone to you rboss many, many times---would you continue to work there or find another job??

I think we both know what your answer would be. If you would remove yourself from a situation like that why would you even consider leaving your small child who cannot help him/her self?? That principal and teacher does not and never will love that child as much as you, keep him where he is loved and admired and make learning a fun-loving and bonding experience!

Good luck and God bless, Kimmie

  8. I did, now my youngest is in 1st grade.
