Does anyone in the civil service work hard?

Now I have no doubt that those digging the streets, emptying the bins and working in the call centres are worked very hard for their meagre wages

I am talking about those in offices, in "professional posts" etc.

I have done 2 civil service jobs, and everyone spent half the time arranging pointless meetings, signing birthday cards, playing on the internet, making coffees, forging their flexi sheets and generally just skiving about.

Fun for a bit, soul destroying after a while.

Are all British (civil service jobs like this?

  1. My uncle worked in the civil service, before getting depression, and all he did was buy rubbish on eBay all day.

    :D

  2. I worked in the Civil Service for many years and I worked extremely hard to help others who were less fortunate than myself.  I worked hard for my promotion and tried to encourage all my staff to give of their best.  In all professions there will be people who skive about, thinking it's clever to beat the system. Actually those who empty bins and dig the streets are not civil servants - they work for local authorities who are not employees of the crown. My job was really interesting and rewarding. It's just a pity there are so many people around who like to knock it without actually knowing what it involved.

  3. All of the jobs you've described are Council jobs, local government, not civil service.  I work for a Council, I work my **** off, there aren't enough hours in the day for me to get my work done and the work I do increases all the time.  No one has the opportunity to forge their worksheets because they can double check against the times we swipe in and out on the security lock.  I don't know anyone in my directorate that doesn't earn every penny they receive.

  4. Does anyone in the civil service know the meaning of the word work? All they seem to know is how to talk down to people and treat them like c**p.
