Does anyone keep track of icebergs? Because they're a threat to ships it seems like someone would keep track of them. Also, since so many people are interested in ice breaking apart due to global warming, it seems like environmentalists would be keeping track of them too. Then again, maybe there's too many to keep track of.

  1. NOAA--the weather people-- has a tracking system they use for those areas where ships may be sailing into danger

  2. US Geological Survey .Try web search all the info there

  3. Actually, the US group that tracks icebergs is a division of the Coast Guard called the "International Ice Patrol." They are headquartered in Groton, CT. You can find out about them here: http://www.uscg.mil/lantarea/iip/home.ht...

They have an automated ice warning that goes out on HF radio, but when I sailed across the atlantic in '92, the skip was bad and we couldn't hear them. I ended up calling them in Groton through the high seas operator and they read me the report :)

  4. yes they are tracked by satelite, well the big ones are atleast.  Hope this helps you

  5. I believe that NOAA (or as I call them, Don't knowa) keeps track of bergs in shipping lanes.  It may not be NOAA, but there is an organization that plots the bergs, especially around shipping routes.
