what I spend for gas? Do all other gas stations charge this or is it just Citgo and why do they do that? The put the extra money back after 3 days, they claim it is a "hold." Isn't this unusual and potentially illegal?

  1. Not unusual and definitely not illegal.  They did not charge your card.  They put a hold on it for $75.  This is called getting an authorization.  It is the only way they can determine if the card being presented is a good card.

When you go to the gas station and swipe your card, they do not know how much gas you are going to pump.  Apparently, this stations chooses to authorize your card for $75.  They only charge your card for what you actually purchase.

Many places do this and it can get confusing if you are close to your credit limit on your card, or worse yet, using a debit card, where all those holds are going on the funds in your checking account.

    You have 2 options here:

    a) go to another gas station

    b) pay cash for your gas

  2. Don't know why, but I would be getting rid of that card and not going to their stations.  That is ridiculous.  I especially wouldn't be using my debit card there if that is the case.  Does the pump state that this type of transaction will occur?  If not, it should. I might also be inclined to contact the Better Business Bureau, bad business in my eyes.
