my backyard is full of foresty wild life and i want to know what the plants are called and what they're used for.is any one this nerdy too?

Yes, there are plenty of folks that nerdy.

Uses... Mrs. Grieve's "A Modern Herbal" was written at the turn of the last century, but is still a pretty good reference.  Any books by Euell Gibbon have plant uses.

A quick internet or library search will turn up useful/edible/medicinal plant books.

As for what they are... try to find a local plant key.  You answer Y or N to various questions concerning the plant to eventually identify the species.  Alternatively, ask someone who already knows what they are (less work on your part).
