I am selling an expensive item...700 dollars. Does whoever buys it just give me a check? How do I know this person is not just writing a bad check and walking away with the merchandise?

  1. only take cash

    never take a check

i use craigslist all the time

  2. You can do a couple things to protect yourself from selling this using Craigslist. First, make sure you think about safety.  You should think about meeting the person in a public place, like a restaurant rather than your home.  When it comes to payment, you can ask for a cashier's check, or better yet cash.  If they insist on paying with a check I'd ask them to meet you at your local bank and cash the check before handing over the item.

    Hope that helps.

  3. You won't know if the check is bad until about two weeks later when it bounces and your bank takes your money away. For such a high dollar item they should be willing to go to the bank and take it out instead of cutting you a check.

Only take cash, and if the item's not heavy try to meet in-between instead of at your home.
