Question:

Does anyone know a quote from Macbeth that shows how the evil in Macbeth propels him to act absolutely evil ?

I can't think of any good quotes that can support this !

I've scanned scenes that I thought would help, looked at a few websites, looked on Sparknotes, but I haven't come across anything very helpful.

Please help if you know any.

Thank you :)

  1. why go to others ? Why not directly to Shakespeare and Macbeth ?

First of all, what is this tragedy of Mscbeth, and why is it a tragedy?

The most important in this matter are the predtctions of the 3 witches. we come to realise that everything is already determined and that, Macbeth is led to commit this murder becaue it is pre-determined , pre-ordained, some wher else in time and space. The sheer helplessness of the duo-Macbeth is clear. that is why we feel sorry, and even sympathetic to Macbeth.  Observe what he says : A.I.sc.VII , ' If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well , It were done quickly.'   .... ' Commends the ingredients of our poison'd chalice   To our own lips.' What follows is the diabolic evil plot to murder the King Duncan by both the husband and wife. Thus one feels evil is brooding , and generating evil in Macbeth. But the evil is not his, evil is the ambition.

the solliloquy before the murder in the next scene is diabolic. the tagedy is that we are just tools, nay marionettes in the hands of these powerful forces, - ambition, jealousy, hatred etc..
