Yes Toe Cutter I am always outside with my child. Most of the time its me by myself except when my husband is off then its me and him together with him. And I know there was one at my parents house that tried to strike at my dad so how is that harmless. Btw I live in Tennessee for all of those saying you dunno where i live. I heard that if a black snake smells milk on a child then it will go down its neck to get it. Is this true. This is what worries me the most with snakes. My child knows not to get around a snake and not to even TOUCH IT. He knows to scream snake and stand still till someone picks him up and to only run if its far away from him

  1. I don't know where you live, but usually when someone says black snakes, they are talking about black rat snakes. They are harmless and will only bite if you pick them up. Tell your kid to leave them alone and you will have no worries. The only good way to get rid of snakes is to get rid of their food source, which is primarily rodents.

  2. There are 2 things you can try, but you need to make sure that you have no other animals around to receive harm from these 2 things.  First of all you can try Lyme, the kind that you mix yourself and it forms kinda like cement.  You can enclose your home with 1/2 inch all the way around OR you can throw out a bunch of moth balls.  Most of the time Black Rat Snakes will not cross that path of either.  But be careful of the Lyme while mixing, it can burn you!!!  But like the others said, Black Rat Snakes are not harmful.  They are not poisonous, but I see what you are saying.  Who wants their 2 yr old playing with a wild snake anyways!!!!  I hope this helps and Good luck!

  3. the snakes are more than likely harmless rat snakes.  just teach your child not to mess with the snakes...the problem with you freaking out about the snakes and not letting your child go outside because of them is that you could instill a fear of snakes in your child that will follow him/her for the rest of their life.

my mother was terribly afraid of snakes and she put that fear in me...it wasnt until a few years ago that i finally got over my fear of snakes (i'm not 42, i probably got over the fear at 38 or so).  i wish that i had not been afraid of snakes because i love them they are wonderful animals.

  4. Why would you worry about your two year old being outside with a totally harmless snake? After all , you or another responsible person will be around to insure the child doesn't harm the snake, right ?

  5. If it really is a black snake you're talking about, don't try to get rid of it.  It's harmless, and a good way for your child to learn not to fear snakes.

I have been bitten by more animals than I can count, and of all of them, a nonvenomous snake hurts the least and is the least likely to cause infection.  It's like being quickly stuck with a few needles -- a little blood; it makes you jump, and then it's over.  No residual pain.  No infection.
