  1. I wouldn't suggest trying to learn online or even trying to read the books and teach yourself. D&D is a complex game that is best learned from watching and/or joining an existing group.

I would suggest trying to find an RPGA (http://www.rpga.com) group in your area. Most RPGA members are willing to help new players. Lurk around your friendly local gaming store if you have one.

  2. You are going to have to at leaste read the dungeon masters manual. I final read it after a few years of playing and it made the game 100% better. Now I don't play, I just create games.

  3. http://www.wizards.com/playdnd/playdnd.a...

It's a decent little demo than kind of runs you through the very basics.  It's not nearly as effective as sitting down at a table with people who've played before, but it's a good place to start.

  4. find an RPG website of groups site that is actively playing a game and see if you can lurk or get into it.  make sure everyone is aware that you are a youngin' to the game. :P

  5. If you are wanting to learn the new 4E version, you might try joining one of the multitude of forums that discuss the game (Wizard's Gleemax or EnWorld are two possibilities). As far as actually playing, find a forum like OnlineGameDay on Yahoo Groups where online games are organized.

  6. I tried doing this when I wanted to get into this game. it didn't work. order some 4th edition books off of amazon.com. you'll get a better price than in stores. believe me. it'll save you a lot of grief

  7. Just go to Barnes and Nobles and pick up a copy of Dungeons and Dragons for Dummies, read it and put it back on the shelf.  As a player all you have to do is keep track of your actions, stuff, spells, and hit points.  Which is pretty easy, if you want to be the Dungeon Master then it is a whole lot more involved and takes more time and energy.  If you need to be the DM, then download an adventure for Wizards of the Coast.  Good luck and be aware that there are at least four versions of the game out there and they don't cross over very well.  So if you get into Fourth addition stay away from stuff copyrighted before 2008
