UK answer.

Here in the UK there is only one census that's completely free to search and that's the 1881 census , it was taken on Sunday 3rd of April. You can see the complete census on www.ancestry.co.uk

A paid basic subscription to ancestry.com will get you most census records and many other records by name search.

This site lets you search by state and year for a name, surname, and/or key words (please keep in mind that the enumerators didn't always ask for how names were spelled - - spelling variations on US Census records are VERY common).  The records on the site above were transcribed by volunteers, aren't they wonderful?!
