I found a loft on 5th and main in downtown. With studios for 600 a month with a spectacular view. The thing is the area looks ghetto and theres crack heads down the street. Plus theres no parking they said i have to buy a parking pass for 90 $ a month, and parking is next door at some other place. Is this a good move? What do you think?

  1. That's downtown for ya!  I LOVE downtown, but that is what comes with the territory.  I lived down in the area for many years, and you cannot have it all.  Just make the best decisions you can.  Prioritize your criteria and then decide what to do about the various things.

Factor the price of parking into your rent, or get rid of your car and take public transportation.

The druggies and homeless are a fact of life, and conditions are much better than they used to be.  People who are really strung out are usually too weakened to make much problem.  So cross the street and mind your wallet.

    I say go for it!

  2. Downtown is very rapidly improving in quality.  A few years ago it was a dump, then the city passed the adaptive reuse ordinance and builders started turning old buildings into apartments.

5th and Main isn't the nicest part of town (hence the affordable price).  But I don't think there's anything wrong with it.  As long as you're sensible, you should be fine.  I'd say go for it and see if you like it.  It will be a different experience than living in a plain old suburb.

  3. 5th and Main seams kinda janky... try the Pegasus building in the Financial District (wilshire & flower i think??) where its much cleaner and where there's a parking garage.

not to mention that the Pegasus is right next to the 7th/Metro subway station.....

  4. Good move?  Heck no!  The east side of downtown...anything east of Olive...is a toilet.  You'd hate living there.
