  1. 1. Yes, it is free. You can download whatever type of Linux you want at no cost. You will need to burn it to a CD though, and possibly write some files to a USB flash drive.

    2. No, it is not harmful. Linux is a very secure OS, and if you were to get a virus you could just format the hard drive. No damage can be done to the PS3s OS.

    3. No, it does not remove the PS3s operating system. To install Linux on the PS3, the PS3 creates a hard drive partition making the systems run separately.

4.Yes, you need a USB mouse and keyboard (you don't technically need a mouse, but it makes it easier). You can use a bluetooth keyboard/mouse after installation, but USB is required beforehand (you need the correct drivers for bluetooth).

    5. The purpose of Linux is to be an operating system. Basically its like Windows, but less feature packed and more complex (these can be pluses for a number of reasons). You can do things on Linux that the PS3 cannot do by itself. It will play more videos with programs like VLC (the PS3 only supports some video/audio codecs). You can also install word processors, and a lot of other programs that a regular PC can run. I personally use it for emulation (playing NES and SNES games).

    6. Sony doesn't care if you use it. They don't approve the individual builds of Linux, but they don't mind if you use it. Installing Linux does not void the warranty.

    7. You can't really rate it. There are different versions of Linux, all which have positives and negatives. It works great for what I use it for (I use Ubuntu), but I can't get Flash video (for online videos) to work. I don't really care since that's not why I use it, but you should do some research to find out what Linux is, and which version you want.

I really wouldn't recommend it if you aren't good with computers and stuff like that. There is really nothing Linux can do that your regular computer couldn't. It's more just for fun than anything else.

Sony also protects the PS3 from p****y by only giving the Alternate OS (Linux) a fraction of its power. You'll find that a regular computer will be faster, and Linux on the PS3 can't run any games (over SNES graphics), so using it as a gaming computer is not an option if that's what you wanted out of it.

  2. It can be. You can download it from a site for free, and if you have a DVD burner you can burn the ISO to a DVD. If you don't, then you'll have to buy it online (it costs money for the discs+s/h and I believe you may get a free shirt).

No, it shouldn't be. If you use the ones designed for the PS3, it'll run. I'm not sure about how well, though.

Nope, it's considered a dual-boot. You'll be able to choose which OS to load.

You do need a USB Keyboard and Mouse, Linux doesn't have Bluetooth drivers.

From what I heard, some people just prefer to use it kinda as a backup PC, and it's also helpful for those doing developmental projects on PS3.

Well, I believe Sony helped them design it, and what would be the point of putting the Install Other OS option in? It won't void your warranty.

Sorry I can't rate it, but I've heard some fun things about it. Like being able to install programs so you can get on MSN, AIM, YIM, etc... If I could, I would've installed it on my PS3.

  3. linux is a people maintained os as such it is never completely fool proof. but p3 is the only system to support it. therefore it should be safer for ps3. as for the why, linux is for advanced computer users and codemaker's as it allows the user to make changes to the os, sony allowed a form of linux to be devolped for the ps3 to stop hackers from doing it anyway like they are for the 360 and to attract game deveolper's as it gives them more colours for there canvas so to speak
