what were the economic effects of the civil war in the North and in the South??

  1. Southern money became worthless sending the south into poverty...also the Union army destroyed farms, factories, etc. so food and suppliesas well as jobs were short. Also because of all the men killed in the war lots more women started working.

  3. Southerners suffered because the North was no longer there to buy their only major source of income, which were crops. Instead, the North bought wheat from Britain. After the Civil War, the South was destroyed and many lost their homes, wealth, etc. They were also not able to purchase many goods produced in factories such as textiles. Inflation was the biggest problem in the South, though.

    The North suffered economically as well, but not nearly as bad as the South did. I can't really remember any specific things about the North though. I took US History 1301 earlier this summer and my memory is terrible! Hope this helps a little though.
