If you type in adoptee search, you will find a lot of links to various boards maintained to help.  However, free can only get you somewhere if the other person is searching.  Some people offer 'search angel' services for free as they already have access to those databases.

Loads, there are loads of search angels who give their time for free because they believe in the right to know the truth.  which State?  they are normally state-specific

I never heard of the "angels" before, so I'll have to follow Heather's links.  I also need free sources of help.
