  1. Making homemade hamster treats: Hamsters are omnivorous, which means they eat both vegetables and meat. Their natural foods include grains, seeds, vegetables, and insects, and they will like corn, oats, or wheat mixed with dry dog food. Premixed hamster food from a pet store has complete nutrition, but some hamsters won't eat it.

Their favorite foods are foods native to their dry habitat, like seeds. For protein and variety, they will eat some small insects.

They like vegetables, but be moderate in how much you feed them. The key word for the hamster diet is variety. It keeps them healthy.

    Hamster Treats Recipe

1/4 a teaspoon of peanut butter

    1 box plain Cheerios cereal

variety of vegetables such as carrots, celery, bok choy

small dog biscuit or stale or fresh bread

    bird seeds and sunflower seeds

    small amount of cheese

Spread peanut butter on dog biscuit, stale or fresh bread. Stick cereal on top and press in some of you hamster's favorite small foods such as bird seeds or sunflower seeds. Next, press in vegetables around the Cheerios. Press cheese around the vegetables to cover. Have fun hiding the treat where your hamster has to climb to get it.

Other treats that can be fed to your hamster include:

Acorns, Almonds (shelled), Beechnuts, Biscuits, Boiled Potatoes, Brazil Nuts, Bread (fresh or stale), Breakfast Cereals, Cake - but not chocolate cake, Cashew Nuts, Chicken (cooked), Cheese, Coconuts, Crickets, Currents,Homemade Dog Biscuits, Egg (scrambled or boiled), Fish (cooked), Hazel Nuts, Mealworms, Meat (cooked), Pecan Nuts, Peanuts (shelled or unshelled), Pistachio Nuts, Prunes, Raisins, Sweet Chestnuts, Sultanas, Toast, Walnuts

You should be careful not to feed too much sweetened food as these could cause the hamster to become fat.

Never feed a hamster any of the following:

Buttercups, Chocolate, Garlic, Onions, Rabbit Mix (containing antibiotic ingredients), Raw Kidney Beans, Sweets, Toffee

    Hamster Treats

    Banana Hamster Treat

    1/4 of a banana

    1 teaspoon honey

    1 tablespoon raisins

    small squirt lemon juice

Mash up the banana and add a small squirt of lemon juice so the banana willstay fresh. Add the honey and raisins, then stir all together. Serve this in asmall bowl separate from hamster food mix.

*Warning: Please note that some hamster owners find that peanut butter can cause hamsters to choke.

    Hamster Dream Dinner

1/2 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)

    1/4 cup of oats

    1/4 cup of sunflower seeds

Mix ingredients together and serve to your pet hamster.

    Hamster Bisciuts

1/4 a teaspoon of peanut butter

    1 box plain Cheerios cereal

variety of vegtables such as carrots, celery, bok choy

small dog biscuit or stale or fresh bread

    bird seeds and sunflower seeds

    small amount of cheese

Spread peanut butter on dog biscuit, stale or fresh bread. Stick cereal on top and press in some of you hamster's favorite small foods such as bird seeds or sunflower seeds. Next, press in vegetables around the Cheerios. Press cheese around the vegetables to cover. Have fun hiding the treat where your hamster has to climb to get it.

    Ingredients

    1 cup powdered milk

    1 cup wheat germ

1/2 cup rolled oat or porridge oats

    1 (100 g) jar berry baby food

    1 egg white

water, enough to moisten the mix

    Directions

1Baby food note: I used Organix's Apple, Strawberry& blueberry compote; it's apple puree, water, blueberry puree, strawberry puree and ground rice.

2You can change this to make different flavoured cookies- just avoid any baby food that contains leeks, onions, chives, spices, garlic or lemon juice as these ingredients are not good for hamsters.

3Measure out dry ingredients into a bowl and whisk together.

4Add in the baby food and about half a jar of water- If you're mixing by hand, rub and press down the mixture with the back of your spoon while mixing.

5This makes a very thick and solid dough mixture but it will still be sticky.

6Roll the mixture into tiny little balls about half an inch or so wide and flatten them slightly.

7Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 175C (non fan oven) or somewhere inbetween 175 and 150C for a fan oven.

8These don't take long to bake because they're so small- only bake them until they go a light brown around the outer edges.

9This took about 8 minutes in my oven (fan oven) to give you an idea of the length of time.

10Cool then store in an airtight container or in the freezer in a freezer-appropriate container
