  1. First of all, remember to not set any tank against the glass walls. It'll make cleaning them a pain.

The 4 most popular designs are:

1 - One "island" set up in the center, with holes that allow fish to swim all the way through the island (from front to back). Sometime, you place a piece of PVC pipe between rocks, you can achieve a tunnel that can be well-concealed in the rock work.

2 - A "lagoon," which is like an island, only there's a pair of horn-like formations in the front of it. This leaves an open area for substrate in the front. Whenever I've seen this.

3 - A "corridor" consists of 2 islands that are shaped triangularly. Between the islands is a straight corridor that runs from one corner of the tank to another. This is popular because it has a lot of swimming room in the corridor, while still allowing two separate and distincts sets of rockwork for fish to hide in.

4 - A "triangle" is like a corridor, but with only one island. It's high and wide at one end, gradually lowering and thinning out as it gets to the other side of the tank. Just like an island, you should leave ways for fish to swim through the rockwork.  This also leaves a wide area in plain site, where the rock work is the thinnest.

My current set-up is triangular, and I stacked the rocks in such a way that I have a large cave in the thickest portion of the tank, and with a slightly-deeper substrate in the open area on the other side of the tank (intended for a canary wrasse to sleep in, although I've yet to actually get around to purchasing one). I've been satisfied with the set up.
