It forms the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

The Appalachian Mountains rose about 500 million years ago.

Graves Mountain is known for kyanite, pyrophyllite, lazulite, pyrite, and rutile as well as many other minerals.

Some of the last kyanite mined was used in insulating tiles for space shuttles.

Gold deposits found near Dahlonega in 1829 caused what many consider to be the first major gold rush in the United States.

  2. There was a gold rush in Lumpkin County during the 1830's.  The name of the county seat was changed to Dahlonega, an indian word meaning "golden".  Most of the gold miners left Georgia for California to try their fortunes as forty-niners.

Today, some of the gold from that era adorns the top of the capitol building in Atlanta.
