  1. It's believed to come from the Old Celtic 'bre' which means hill. By extension it's also associated with noble or king (as in a high position).

    Brian Boru certainly made the name very popular in the second millenia and he actually started the surname O' Brien.


  2. Brian is a Gaelic name, the BrYan is a modern spelling that actually annoys more people as it does not look right.

    The irish for hill is cnoc.

  3. not Bryan... but Brian Boru is a famous King of Ireland.
