  1. Rear Admiral Ming E. Chang was born in Shanghai, China and was one of the most respected Navy leaders of the 1980s.

His career included increasingly important assignments in the Navy’s cruiser and destroyer commands. He became the first Asian American naval officer to reach flag rank. He subsequently joined Raytheon Company, where he was Vice-President for Business Development (Defense/Electronic Systems) before his retirement from the company. Among many nonprofit activities, Admiral Chang serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, The College of William and Mary, and as a member of the World War II Memorial Advisory Board.

  2. I knew high ranking people from other countries while I was in the Marine Corps.

They got the same respect as any other Marine,

UNLESS they had an accent that was so thick we couldn't understand them.

My husband had a filipino Gunny who had such a thick accent everybody had a hard time understanding him. The only people who could understand him were others who spoke Tagalog.

  3. at least one person in DH's OCS class was naturalized.. He was from Kenya or Liberia or something.

all officers must earn the respect, regardless of their mother country.

  4. I served many years in the Army and served with plenty of naturalized  officers.  They were born in countries from all over the globe but all shared one thing: a genuine desire to serve the country in which they had to work to become citizens.  These officers have often seen life without the privileges our nation affords.  They carry a strong desire to protect that freedom and received the same level of courtesy and respect as their natural born American counterparts.

    I hope that this helps.
