Question:

Does anyone know any other superstitious sayings?

Growing up we were taught

"Red sky at night, sailor's delight,

Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."

Just like I'm sure every other kid was.

I also took a trip to Ireland in the recent past and our tour guide told us a rhyme about magpies:

"One for sorrow

Two for joy

Three for a girl

Four for a boy

Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for secrets

Yet to be told."

I'm assuming that is referring to the number of magpies seen at a given time, but...considering we don't really have magpies in North Carolina, I've never heard that one anywhere else.

Does anyone have any others? It's always neat to hear what people have been taught.

  1. The "red sky" saying actually came from the bible (Matthew XVI: 2-3)

Never open an umbrella in the house because it's bad luck.

When there has been a death in the house you must cover all the mirrors or the spirit may stick around to watch you.

If your shoes creak they haven't been fully paid for.

There are a ton out there if you just google it.

  2. Never put a hat on the bed.

Never put shoes on a table.

If you spill the salt, throw a pinch over your left shoulder.

  3. * If a bird dies in your house, another family member will die this year as well.

    * cross a black-cats path means you are going to have an altercation with either your lover or a very close friend.

    * Find and pick up a penny that is face-down, you are going to make a foolish decision and loose some money.

    * If your ears ring, someone is talking about you.

  4. Married in white,

    You have chosen a right.

    Married in blue,

    Your lover is true.

    Married in pink,

    Your fortunes will sink.

    Married in green,

You will not long be seen.

    Married in yellow,

    Ashamed of the fellow.

    Married in brown,

    You'll live out of town.

    Married in grey,

    You'll live far away.

    Married in black,

    You'll wish you were back.

  5. Never trust a man be him friend or brother who's hair is one color and beard another.

  6. Red sky at night, etc., is not a superstitious saying but a weather observation based on the sky. It was used much by sailors.

Where I came from it was not correct to walk under ladders or to have black cats cross your path. And Friday the 13th was not considered a good day.
