Does anyone know any places that are similiar to california?

ok so my friend and i grew up in california and absolutley love it. as much as we'd love to live there we simply can't afford it. We are going to become college students soon so we want a place thats not too expensive, and has california like weather thats near a beach if possible...we can't think of anything so any ideas?
