Does anyone know any problems with the four cylinder of the Jeep Patriot?

My family and I are having a tough decision picking out a car. We had a 1997 Jeep Cherokee and now we are getting ready to purchase a new car. My dad wants a Forester Subaru while my mom and I want the Jeep Patriot. To make everyone happy, we need to find out if there is anything wrong with the Jeep Patriot's four cylinder engine.

Also, does anyone own a Jeep Patriot or a Forester and wants to tell about their experience with it? I would really appreciate it.

Thank You!

  1. Jeeps have the worst reliability issues next to Land Rover. The Patriot is new so long-term reliability isn't reported yet. I would imagine that you could do some research on the engine and see what other models use it then do some review comparisons there. But if the choice is between a Subaru and an Jeep Patriot, you and your mother need to look at it more practically than emotionally. The Subaru is a fantastic car and it will last you a VERY long time. No hassle, just pure love. Subarus are some of the best cars out there, even compared to the luxury brands. They can last 25 years no problem and tackle winters without challenge. By far, your best bet is the Forester.

  2. Of the two engines available for the Patriot, you want the 2.4 liter, 172-horse 4-banger. No real problems with it, but the CVT automatic trans insn't universally loved. Some testers think the Patriot's interior looks a little downscale, but the Patriot is $5,000 cheaper than the Subaru, as well.

And, by the way, Jeep's reliability record isn't as abysmal as some people would have you believe
