the only 'secret' is playing good poker. You could try getting to know the ropes on the free tables, but to play properly you'll end up having to stump up cash at some point. People don't always play the same way if there's nothing riding on it, so free play is not a great guide to how you're doing, but it will at least teach you the basics.

Once you're ready, get a good poker book like Doyle Brunson's 'Super System' and read through it thoroughly. A lot of todays crop of stars learned their chops from the old 'Texas Dolly'

as already stated, by some books, or play for free before you start to REALLY understand the game.

Only take advantage of deposit bonuses, and clear them by playing the .25/.50 tables with $15 table entries only.  Try to get as many tables going as you can handle.  Fold nearly every hand and never bluff.   Also get your friends on and ask if you can use their account for deposit bonuses also if they aren't going to be using it that month.  After clearing the bonus, cash out and wait for next month.  If you are doing the maximum on 2 or 3 accounts per month then you will have your fill of poker and actually see some profit coming in.

I'm a US player so I can't play there anymore, but when I was playing, the max deposit bonus was $100 for a $500 deposit and I had to clear 900 hands with rakes to get the bonus.  I did this for 15 months and never lost a single time.  I had 8 tables going and cleared the hands in about 2 1/2 hours.  Remember to fold fold fold.  Only play A A, K K, Q Q by raising hefty preflop.  AK, AQ raise about 3X BB.  Suited Aces and pairs (2,2 - J,J) for the minimum if you can get in.  You have to be disciplined not to start playing hands.  If you were to flat out fold every singe hand then you'd lose about $30 in blinds and make $100 on the bonus.  So the point in even playing a hand at all is only for "guaranteed" wins.

Party Poker is, or at least was, the best site for the bonus.
