  1. THE PERSON THAT SUGGESTED THAT YOU TAKE THE ORIENT TRAIN FAILED TO TELL YOU THAT JUST FOR ONE PERSON IT WILL COST YOU WELL OVER $5,000 DOLLARS AND YOU CAN ONLY CATCH IT IN UTAH - SALT LAKE CITY..

    BUT IF THIS IS YOUR GIG THEN BY ALL MEANS... LOVE THAT GOOD & PLENTY CHOOOOO, CHOOOO.

  2. Faina;

         I don't know of any "tours" as such, but Amtrak does offer regular scheduled service from New York to California via Chicago.

         Assuming you are departing from New York City's Penn Station your most direct route would be on the "Lakeshore Limited" to Chicago. Travel time is about 18 hours

         From Chicago you would travel on the "California Zephyr" if you were going to Northern California. Travel time is about 53 hours. The California Zephyr terminates in Emeryville, California, across the bay from San Francisco.

          From Chicago you would travel on the  "Southwest Chief" if you were going to Southern California. Travel time is about 43 hours. The Southwest Chief terminates at Los Angeles Union Station.

  3. You can either do Amtrak, which is pretty much regular public rail, or you can do the American-Orient Express, which is more like a cruise/sightseeing adventure.  The second choice runs from DC to LA, so you couldn't go directly from NY, but getting to DC isn't bad, you could do that by train too.
