  1. uhm...all i know is that in general you guys have it harder than right handed people, since most tools are designed for the right handed mass.

I believe in some sports, like cricket, baseball and softball being a lefty is an advantage, since left handed people play with more right handed people than the other way around.

  2. I heard that lefthanded people on average die younger than righthanded people, but that seems kind of ridiculous. I'd be interesting to see if that was true, and if so, if there's actually a correlation between lefthandedness and age of death.

children were forced to write with their right hands in school (my grandpa used to get the strap if they caught him using his left hand)

Ursula LeGuin's book "The Left Hand of Darkness."

the French word for 'left' is 'gauche' which translates as 'awkward' in English

the English word 'sinister' has its roots in Latin, as does Italian...the word for 'left' in Italian is 'sinistra.'

I was one of those people born left-handed but was changed to a right-hander by my grandmother, who was also born left-handed but had her left hand tied behind her back during her waking hours so she could only use her right hand. In my case, rather than tie my left hand behind my back, she would slap my left hand any time I reached for anything with my left hand.

People back then (I'm old) were superstitious and believed that left-handedness was a negative thing, whether being associated with wiping one's butt with the left hand or being the hand of the Devil or whatever. Granny did the same to my mother (her daughter) as well.

I am told that being 'changed' like that often leads to stuttering; I don't know if there is indeed any correlation, but my mother stuttered her whole life. I stuttered when I was younger, but outgrew it (with a lot of effort) by the time I finished high school.
