My mother was born in a place called Juan Aldama, Zac. in Mexico and although she was not born with this last name, her last name was changed by her grandmother to her married name which was Valenciana. Please help me find family, I can't find any ancestry records!

  1. In case you haven't already see this, there is a family tree on WorldConnect that has:

    Manuela VALENCIANA LUNA

Birth: 25 Dec 1928 in Zorrilla, Zacatecas, Mexico

Death: 18 Oct 1996 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico

    Father: Valdomero VALENCIANA, born 1908

    Mother: Andrea LUNA, born 1906

    Husband:  Francisco AGUIRRE PADILLA

Born 4 Oct 1909 in Camacho, Zacatecas, Mexico

For some reason, I'm unable to include the link, but you can go to rootsweb.com, type Valenciana in the last name box under Search Rootsweb.com and it will come up as the #8 of 8.

There are also a mailing lists for people with genealogy interest in the State of Zacatecas, here are the links:

I just read about Hispanic surname customs where it was quite common where a child's middle name was his father's surname and the last name was his mother's surname.  I can see how this must be confusing for you.  Sorry I couldn't help more.

  2. You won't find many Mexican genealogy records on the internet anywhere. There are a few census records, but nothing from the timeframe that you need. You'll need to contact the National Archives for a copy of her INS file, then contact the town hall in Juan Aldama and the parish where your mother and grandmother worshipped in order to get sacramental records. You are entitled to copies of all of this information. It may take a few months, but it will fill in the missing pieces to your family. The parish records should take you back several generations.

  3. googling would help ,or maybe www.ask.com

  4. I know many Valencias - but no one with the "na" suffix added.  Best wishes
