The mistress was the one to end the relationship.    One day he tried to make her jealous,  by calling another woman to see her reaction.  She had warned him in the past.   That she wouldn't put up with cheating,  like his wife had.  She told him if he cheated on her she would cheat on him.  The day of the phone call she kicked him out of her apartment,  and never spoke to him again.  At the time he was still living with the wife.    He was planing on leaving the wife. Since she wouldn't see him again.  He stayed with the wife.

my first hubby cheated constantly, he remarried this woman and every time he cheated on her she caught him, once she even stabbed him or so i have heard from a sister in law.when two cheaters get together there will never be trust. she has been married to him over 30 years,there wasn't a year that went by that there wasn't a cheating episode, she had a hard life,today they live in different parts of the house, rarely speak,he is henpecked and is now an old man who has many regrets.he finally met his match with her,and the cheating did not stop until he got too sick to run around.

I know this one woman who has been seeing this married man for over 20 years.  He actually divorced his wife and re-married another woman all while keeping his mistress.  She and him are madly in love, yet she refuses to marry him (because he's a cheater) and he likes to be married.  I've seen them together.  It's one of the purest, most honest and most loving relationships I've ever seen.  Believe it or not.
