Does anyone know anything about a body wave?

hi i was wondering if a body wave is bad for your hair?i have thick healthy hair but i really want a body wave done to give my hair more curls. Now I;m scared to get it done because i heard a body wvae or any perm of that matter can damage your hair. Anyone know if a body wave can seriously damage your hair?
