Does anyone know anything about a picture featuring Robert E. Lee on a horse?

My aunt has this old picture of Robert E. Lee, dating back to the early to mid 1900's or possibly even earlier. She wants to know how long ago its been since it was created. She has had it over 40 years or more. On the back it has a piece of information about the Atlantic Pacific Tea Company. It could be very valuable. If anyone has any information, please let me know.

  1. Did you look on EBay?

This might bet a better response in the  painting section.

There is a famous picture of Lee on Traveller that was made by Michael Miley.

  2. http://www.milartgl.com/Images_b/b_rober...

(on this site, the images are listed by number, so you have to scroll down about 3/4 of the way until you see "b_robert_e_lee.jpg" and then click on the link.

Click on link "Robert E. Lee at Chancellorsville", and new page opens up with larger version.

Since Robert E Lee died in 1870, all statues of him on his horse Traveller, show all four of the horse's feet on the ground. This means, according to what I have read anyway, that the soldier depicted died after a war, and not from wounds received in that war.

There are 14+ pages of pictures of Gen. Lee on either a Yahoo or Google images search.

  3. It was a give-away done by the old A&P stores. The original photo would have been during the Civil War since Lee humbly withdrew from the public eye after the war to run Washington and Lee College.

A&P would have released the picture sometime in the 1930s to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Civil War. It's value is limited to Depression-era collectors and Civil War buffs.

  4. Don't get your hopes up. Take it to an auction house, like Sotheby's, which has branches in most big cities. Look in the yellow pages under "Art Auction".
