Hi, I traded some training work for a box of old tack. In it is a very pretty aluminum curb bit marked renalde. When I run a search, I keep coming up with crockett. does anyone know anything about renalde? how are they connected to crockett? it does seem well made for a aluminum.

  1. Renalde was also known as "Crockett and Renalde".

  2. What do you want to know?  If it's safe to use? What it's used for?

As long as it is clean and in good repair I don't see why not.  If it is an appropriate bit for your application, go for it.  Since it is made of aluminum it may be a little bit brittle.

Crocket Renalde is the full brand name.  I believe at one point they were separate but I don't know any details.

  3. I have several around the house as decor, but do not usually use them on the horse.  I have paid pretty good money for some of them, so you might have a valuable piece.  Try posting a few pictures of it - I have a ton of reference books that we could probably find it in and get a value.

  4. Balanced or not, I wouldn't use it.  Aluminum is too lightweight to function in bitting.

  5. Crockett-Renalde made bits for a good portions of the 1900's. The Aluminum bits were especially popular in the 60-70s. An ebay search usually brings up quite a few. I've seen rare ones go for $100, but most sell in the $5-20 range depending on style and condition.
