  1. Unfotunatley I think it's a case of visiting the place. You may be able to access parish records etc for any christenings etc (if they were christians). It is also useful to look up historical records for the area which may mention what you are looking for - examples could be the old 'tourist' books they used to produce in those days. The library of national archives would be the best place to try. You could also possibly track down wills etc through them or the parish. Try to find out who owned most of the land in the area at the time - their documented records may mention something to do with your family.

I'm trying to find out about a farm my grest grandfather lived in around the same time and it is really difficult.

    Good Luck!

  2. According to the 1891 Wales Census,

Name: Arthur Powell, age 32 (b. abt. 1869) is the head of the household at Cornel Farm in St. Harmon, Radnorshire, Wales.  The Civil and ecclesiastical parish is Nantmel.  Household members are as follows:

    George Barnes 17 (servant)

    Arthur Powell 32

    Arthur Powell 4 (b. abt. 1897)

    Elizabeth Powell 14 (niece; b. abt. 1887)

    Mary E. Powell 1 (b. abt. 1900)

Mary Elizabeth 27 (b. abt. 1874 in Abbey-Cwrnhir, Radnorshire, Wales)

    Thomas 3 (abt. 1898)

The 1881 Census for Wales shows that Arthur (age 12) is the son of George and Martha Powell.  He is born in Radnor, Radnorshire, Wales, in the Civil Parish of  Bleddfa.  He is listed as a "scholar" (in the US this would be called "attending school").  George Powell is a tailor and a grocer and is a native of Bleddfa, Radnorshire, Wales. Martha's birthplace was Kinnerton, Radnorshire, Wales. The household members are as listed:

    Albert 6 (1875)

    Arthur 12 (1859)

    George 39 (1842)

    Louisa 9 (1872)

    Martha 33 (1848)

    Rosaline 2 (1879)
