  1. Polonus appears to be Latin in origin, not Greek !

Alexius Sylvius Polonus (1593 - c. 1653) was a Polish Jesuit astronomer and maker of astronomical instruments. He adopted the added name of Polonus, meaning "Pole" in Latin.

    Polonus Vorstius' Fiery Death

    The Legend:

Sometimes between 1468-1503 -- during the reign of Queen Bona Sforza in Milan, Italy -- a knight by the name of Polonus Vorstius consumed "two ladles of strong wine," vomited fire and was then consumed by flames.

Martinus Polonus (also Martin von Troppau, Martinus Oppaviensis, and Martin z Opavy); died after June 22, 1278, in Bologna. Martinus Polonus, one of the most respected chroniclers of the Middle Ages, probably came from Troppau (Czech: Opava). the surname "Polonus" indicates his home monastery which belonged to the Polish province of the Dominican Order.

The voyage which Jon Skolp made to Iceland and Greenland, which began towards the end of 1476, and in which Christopher Columbus took part, as I have previously mentioned, was a different voyage altogether. In a letter addressed to the king of Portugal by Martin Behaim, dated July 14th 1493, we can read that the Duke of Moscow had discovered the island of Greenland some years previously. This can only refer to Jon Skolp (latinised to Johannes Scolvus) and his 1476 expedition, in documents written in Latin he is referred to as Johannes  Scolvus  Ã¢Â€Âœpolonus” instead ”pilotus” (pilot). Skolp would therefore be the Pole and Greenland would belong to Russia, all because of the mistake of writing Polish instead of pilot, a  fact that was not noticed by Behaim at that time. But it is highly significant that in 1493 there was a large Norwegian colony in Greenland and it was there that Skolp was based.
