  1. Hi Leo,

John H is correct.  However if you don't want to wait and think you might have a shot at getting an inside track, here is what you will need to get your started.

As John mentioned the parent agency was the National Agricultural Research Center for the Kyushu Okinawa Region.  You are specifically looking for a contact over or within the Laboratory of Sugarcane Breeding (which is located in Tanegashima).

The top person over that laboratory is Akira Sugimoto who is the Director of the Department of Crop and Food Science.  His email address is sugiaki@affrc.go.jp

If you don't get a response back from him try contacting Tetsuo Sato. He is the Associate Director of Research for the Department.  His email address is sato@affrc.go.jp

If you strike out with those two gentlemen then you can try your hand at either contacting or visiting the lab directly.  The address and contact information is:

    Tanegashima (Laboratory of Sugarcane Breeding)

    1742-1 Anno, Nishino-omote, Kagoshima 891-3102

    Phone +81-9972-5-0100

    FAX. +81-9972-5-0888

The cultivars or varieties you should be asking about will be the strains: Ni22, Ni23, and KRFo93-1

Good luck and hope this helps.

    Y

  2. It’s a new variety of sugarcane, named for its size (3 meters tall) as much as its vigor, and is grown on a test field on the tiny island of Ie in Okinawa, Japan.

Monster Cane, formally, "high-biomass sugarcane,” is Japan's first variety designed to produce ethanol without sacrificing sugar output.  It was jointly developed by Asahi and the National Agricultural Research Center for Kyushu Okinawa Region, an administrative agency.  In a few months, the cane grown on Ie will be harvested to feed a pilot plant run by Asahi Breweries, which aims to test its technology for producing ethanol from cane at a cost of just 30 yen (25 cents) per liter, making it competitive with gasoline. Asahi aims to put its technology into practical application after completing tests at the pilot plant in 2010.

Monster-cane is brand new, developed in Japan, so it may be a while before you can get your hands on it.  The USDA is showing interest in the cane and will probably come to America through them, but it will be a slow process.  Good Luck
