If so, what is it like? I want to know if my last name originated from there? My last name is Cotaya. I live in the U.S. and am from the U.S. as well as my family.

  1. Found it!

Look on 'www.guia campsa.com' for Cotaya. Not La Cotaya.

Go to Yahoo Spain and have a look there (in Spanish). That usually finds something.

  2. Yes, it seems to be related to Asturias. As you've seem, there is a small village there called "Cotaya". In the ancient Spanish spoken in that region it means something like "small hill" or "small boulder". But I haven't found anyone with that surname in Spain, so probably, when your family mirated to America they took the name of the place where they were from.

  3. There are only 28 people in La Cotaya (Lieres, Siero, Asturias, Spain)so no many chances to find a relative there. According to the official statistics there are between 0 and 4 people with that surname in the whole Spain either born or living in the country.
