  1. "Eight Belles is named in homage to the Maine home of the late American artist Newell Convers (N.C.) Wyeth, father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth, both renowned artists."

  2. It is connected to a painting by one of the Wyeths.  I think the owners were/are friends of the Wyeths and a lot of their horses were named after paintings.

I think the name was originally Eight Bells, but they made it feminine for the filly.

Edit to correct - Eight Bells is the name of N.C. Wyeth's home in Maine.

  3. "Eight bells, all is well" Mariners used bells to keep track of how long they had to stay on duty. Crew members worked 4 hour shifts. Every Thirty minutes they'd ring bells. First 30 minutes = 1 bell  One hour = 2 bells  One hour and a half = 3 Bells  And so on till the fourth hour = 8 bells
