Does anyone know how I can become involved in particle physics?

I am very interested in physics and chemistry equally. Mainly, my interests lie in the fields of particle physics and sub-atomic particles. I have heard of the field and subject, obviously, but have never really heard of the career, or more so, anyone actually working in it. Does anyone know how I can get involved in it as a real career over here in Britain. Thanks.

  1. look on ucas

  2. A good start is getting a degree in Physics, preferably with a 3rd/4th year speciality in particle physics. From there, you could start applying for low level jobs in the national labs (NPL, Daresbury, RAL) or universities. At this level, your options are limited. Getting a PhD would give you a chance at applying for more and higher  level jobs, mostly in these same institutes. Take a look at http://www.jobs.ac.uk/sector/physical/ for a list of the current available posts and the requirements for each.

  3. getting one in britain would be very hard, as not much research is done here. you could help research for universitys, but your best bet is to get a degree in physics, and then trying to get involved with the MASSIVE particle physics project in switzerland. billions of euros from all over the world have been spent on subatomic particle research. In fact the discovery of the higgs boson, could be within the next few months. exciting stuff!
