Does anyone know how Maria Montessori funded or paid for her first day care?

I have thoroughly researched Montessori and I don't remember anywhere reading how she funded her first daycare. She was a researcher and it wasn't a daycare but Early Childhood Education!

It's a good question, but I only have part of the answer.  The first "Casa di Bambini"  was opened in the San Lorenzo section of Rome.  It was quite poor, with most of the people working all day or "all night" so that they slept most of the day.  The young pre-school aged children in one apartment complex were often left alone and were destroying the property.  So Maria made a deal with the owner if the building.  He gave her a free apartment and she would take care of the children.  She also asked for his daughter to be the teacher since she wasn't trained in education and therefore bring outside ideas into her experiment.   I have no idea if she got paid and if she did, I have no idea of where the money came from to pay her.  The same goes for the materials.  I have no idea where the money for the materials came from.  She was a doctor, and worked at a hospital, so maybe there was some financing from there.

Listen, the first kindergarten was in the streets of San Lorenzo, it was a poor suburb. I do not think it could have costed that much. Also you must remember Maria had a university post and also had her own practice, so by this time she was not exactly poor.

After this first one, she became famous and the government loved her because she was a female role model and also Italian. She began to receive funding from the Italian government after this to open more kindergartens.
