I have been riding for 10 years now (since i was 3!) and i got a new horse last year and we are competing in dressage grade 4 and showjumping 85cm. Usually I have a great seat but when i jump higher than 95cm i tend to get out of the saddle a bit more. My horse is an excellent jumper and i think that she just gets a bit excited. My instructor says that the higher he puts the jumps she jumps an extra 2 foot above it!

Do i need a proper jumping saddle?

  1. I jump in a dressage saddle and it's ok for me.  You should try knee high boots because you get a better grip on the saddle, although they can be pretty expensive.

My mare gets pretty excited about jumping, too, so it could be her, but keep pulling her back slightly before the jump if you feel her rushing and pull her back afterwards as well.  This should teach her to calm down and it should minimise the risk of her getting too excited and bolting after a jump.

Also, try jumping her over long jumps, not just high ones.  The feeling in the saddle is totally different.

  2. put more grip on ur legs and go with the saddle while balancing on the neck always helps but it could be how the horse lands

  3. If you have a multipurpose saddle you don't need to go buy a jumping saddle. Showjumping saddles most often have less padding and support than a multipurpose. This is great if you have the balance and control of your leg, not go great if you don't.

I didn't buy a showjumping saddle til I was jumping well over 120cm and even then I must admit I've slide out of it in the first few tight turns.

I recommend you stick to a multipurpose and get a little more practice in with the big jumps. Your horse will get less exited (and hopefully jump more fluently) and you learn to adjust your seat and balance a little higher.

  4. YEA I CAN JUMP WITH NO HANDS BUT IT TAKES TIME EFFORT AND PRACTISE!!!

IVE BEEN WORKING WITH HORSES SINCE THE AGE OF 2.

I WOULD GET A JUMPING SADDLE IF YOUR HORSE GETS EXITED ON JUMPS!

  5. It really depends on what you are jumping in at the moment. Once you move up to 95cm, the horse is going to use himself properly so you will definitely feel it more. A GP saddle would be o.k at this height.providing it is fairly forward cut. Some GPs are simply aweful to jump in, others are fine. Ask your instructor to assess your saddle.

  6. i used to jump 1.5 in an all purpose, just practise...it does make perfect..good luck
