I am U.S citizen but I want to move to France. I don't want to have the short term or long term visa, instead I would like to go through the process of obtaining legal status to work and live in France. I know it may take some time. Also, does it help if I hold Italian citizenship...Am I consider part of the European Union with that?

  1. If you live in Italy, you shouldn't have to apply for citizenship, just a visa, either working, or temporary.  Once there, you can get amnesty and apply for citizenship.

  2. If you are an Italian citizen then, as a citizen of the EU, you require no permission, visa,or permit to live and work in France for as long as you like. Just register with the local prefecture of police when you have found lodgings.

It will greatly simplify matters if you have an Italian passport so you don't have to prove to any French official that you are, in fact, a citizen of italy.

  3. If you have European citzenship as well, you should be able to work/live in France without getting a visa or work permit. (I know this because as an American working in France, I have many European Union collegues who don't need the same paperwork as I do.)  Hope this helps! But to be sure, I'd check with embassies/consulates of all countries involed.

  4. remember anything you do in france will be a long process so leave yourself plenty of time and get to know all the dates of all the national holidays -you will find this usefull there are alot and can be a pain if your trying to do something!!
