Especially if he resides in Houston, TX?

I know that if a refugee stays here for a year, he/she could apply for a green card. But does anyone know how long the process is for them to actually get it?

  1. These days USCIS processing is delayed tremendously. You can check the processing times of local field office in this website. There are several offices in TX, so he should know which field office is under his jurisdiction. Looks like many of TX Office is processing the I-485 applications either on in or before September 2007.

  2. Being recognized as a refugee depends on the country they left.

  3. One year after legally becoming an asylee or refugee in the United States, the applicant may apply for a Green Card and eventually for United States Citizenship.

  4. After a person is accorded refugee status, he has to be present at least one year before eligible to apply for a green card.  It will take at least a year and perhaps a decade or so to get a green card -- it is not automatically issued to refugees.  There is no way to predict how long it will take in this particular instance.  Things could change in Iraq and he could go home before getting any green card.

  5. Green card is one of the HARDEST documents to get! It really depends. Sometimes it can take a long tiem like years, and a shorter time like months.
