  1. you're lucky I'm italian!

    they're exactly 491 km (5h by car)..you have to consider that italian transports aren't so good and in the holidays period there is a lot of traffic...it all dipends by how much time do you have and if you're a patient traveller...it's a bit long trip, but they're two wonderful cities!

  2. It is definitely worth the trip from the standpoint of seeing Pompeii, but it also depends on how long you'll be in Italy, whether you need to return to Florence, and what your other choices are. The travel time becomes fairly significant if you're only on a short break. When I have visitors from the US, we sometimes drive down from about 2 hours further north leaving at 4 am. But we usually go on down to the Amalfi Coast for a couple of days.

    If you don't have a car, you can take the train. A high speed train from Florence to Naples takes 3 hr 20 min. From there, you take the Circumvesuviana train toward Sorrento and get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop. The trip on the Circumvesuviana is 36 minutes. The station is a short walk from the entrance to the ruins. You might consider taking the train from Florence to Bologna and catching the night train to Naples (arrives at 8:10 am). The train from Bologna doesn't stop in Naples, but you don't have a connection in Casserta and can sleep through the night on the way. There are also some night trains from Florence with an early change  in Casserta.

    Personally, I would highly recommend this if you have time to spend a few days and also see Capri, Sorrento, and/or the Amalfi Coast while you're there.

  3. remember south of Roma there are no euro star trains and they are all the old slow style so take that into account for your time   these trains make a lot more stops as well

  4. Hi! I'm writing from Italy ( so I apologize for my English!)

    There are many different ways to go from Florence to Pompeii:

    1) by train :it takes 5 hours; several trains a day; for timetables and prices , visit the web site of italian railways  www.trenitalia.it

    2) By car: 4 or 5 hours by highway, it depends from traffic;

    3) By flight: 1 hour of flight from Florence to Naples and half hour by bus or by train from Naples to Pompeii.

    Pompeii, Capri and Naples'area are really worth making the trip! Enjoy your time in Italy!
