  1. There are two different types of lawyers in UK. Solicitors and Barristors. Solicitor is a lawyer who looks after paperwork and advise Barrisors and act as intermeditory on legal matters for clients.

Barristor represent the client and argue in the court.

There are several ways to become a solicitor. Most common is doing a LLB degree and the do an apprenticeship with a law firm. it takes around 4 to 6 years. Becoming a barrister is a bit hard and takes longer time and money.

  2. 3 years full time at college or 4years part time at college.

  3. First of all you need 3 decent A level GCSE'S  and then you need to be accepted at a university for a Law degree so that's 2 years for A level and 3 years for your Law degree  Once you have your degree you need to be accepted by a Solicitors company as an Apprentice Solicitor. The apprenticeship is known as Articles and this lasts for two years

So from A Level to qualifying is 7 Years

To be a Barrister likewise you need the A levels and the Degree but then you apply to an Inns of Court to be trained as a Barrister. An Inns of Court is a Law Firm generally  with a High Court Judge as its Head

The training here is much more intense(and is 7 days a week not five) than as a Solicitor but only lasts one year so from A level Student to Barrister is 6 years

As a barrister though you cannot be employed by a Law firm even though you work from the inns of court you are always self employed. Be aware even when training as a barrister you will not be paid. Most trainee's need financially sound parents to help them pay their way

Barristers obtain most of their work from Solicitors who provide them with the knowledge of individual cases

In training in order to argue a case in front of a High Court Judge you will need A Certificate of Advocacy generally only Barristers have this certificate but Solicitors can obtain one providing the place they are training are willing to pay for it and allow the investment in time

Solicitors and Barristers are comparable  in the hierarchy to Doctors(GP's)and Specialists
