    Maryland is a historical state. Delaware borders it on the eastern side. Pennsylvania borders Maryland are on the north. Virginia and West Virginia attach to Maryland on the south. Maryland is a mid-Atlantic state.

    Maryland has four seasons. In the eastern part of Maryland it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It is colder in the western part of the state because of the mountains. Maryland has 42 inches (107 cm) of precipitation each year. The lowest temperature recorded was -17.8° C.

    The size of Maryland is 12,407 square miles and it ranks 42 in size it is a middle State. Maryland's population is 5,094,289 people and ranks 9th in population compared to others states.

    Maryland's state capital is Annapolis. Another important city is Baltimore. Have you heard of the Baltimore Orioles? They are a major league baseball team.

    The state bird is the Baltimore oriole. There are many types of flowers that grow in Marland but only one is the state flower and it is the black-eyed Susan. The state tree is the white oak tree. Do you know the state dog is the Chesapeake Bay retriever?

    There are many different landforms in Maryland. The Blue Ridge Plateau extends from New York to Georgia. The Chesapeake Bay is a major landform.

    A lot of history surrounds Maryland. You may know that Harriet Tubman freed 300 slaves in Maryland. Cal Ripkin Jr. plays baseball for the Baltimore Orioles. He won three golden gloves for baseball.  He holds the major league baseball record for consecutive games-played at 2,632 games. They built a statue for him. Edgar Allan Poe wrote terrifying stories and poems. All this happened in Maryland!

    In 1608 Jon Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay. in the early 1800's Baltimore saw battles between the British and the Americans. Many battles of the Civil War were fought in Maryland. The capitol of our country, Washington D.C. is located on land that once belonged to Maryland.

    There are many recreation spots in Maryland. St. Mary’s City is a good place to visit. Fort McHenry is an 18th century fort shaped like a star. Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangle Banner there in September 1814 during an attack by the British.  The Flag House is a great place to go on a rainy day.

    Maryland has a lot of customs. The governor's open house is an important one. Another custom is the state jousting festival. Many people watch the state jousting festival in their home.

    Maryland manufactures equipment, food products and chemicals. Maryland has a few above ground natural resources. They are trees, water, soils, plant life and rocks. The below ground natural resources are clay, soils and coal. Maryland grows corn, oats, soybeans, berries, wheat, potatoes, tobacco and raise oysters, hogs, and chickens.

    Maryland has it all. It has mountians, beaches and large cities. Sounds like a great place to visit.
