Does anyone know how much a lateral file cabinet will hold compared to a vertical file cabinet?

My husband and I are huge packrats. We have four file cabinets crammed full of "important" papers. We are getting ready to move to another house and we have to downsize. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping paperwork other than file cabinets (please be nice :-)

Before you move, sort through the "important" papers and do a reality  check on what you have.

Do you really need the user manual and warranty for the dishwasher you replaced 10 years ago?  Paystubs from 8 years ago?  Sort out the manuals that apply to things you are leaving behind and leave them for the new owners.

Financial paperwork ... generally speaking, unless it involves a capital expenditure, you can discard them after 5 years.

Lateral files will hold more than a standard file of similar size.
