  1. What was shown there was a crude representation of an x-y plotter - a device that will trace both an "x" axis and a "y" axis pattern simultaneously.  You will notice that one of the patterns is directly translated to the pens side-to-side motion, while the other pattern is transferred to an up-and-down reference by the 90° crank arm - that arm moves the pen in a vertical direction.

    This way, you can design the horizontal and vertical motions independently and combine them through use of that "plotter".

    I doubt that you will find any plans for the device, but the demonstration probably gives you enough information for you to make one of your own.
