  1. Travel Agents are actually sent on all expenses paid trips for their work. You can study to become a travel agent at TAFE.

  2. Ask Lonely Planet Publications, Fodors, Rough Guide, Michelins, etc or any of those travel guide companies.

They employ people to check out hotels and restaurants

  3. You can do this travel agents course at Tafe

  4. Sounds as though you want to become a travel journalist.

Some of the options to be a travel journalist are free-lance journalist;  work for a newspaper fulltime, parttime or as a stringer;  'work' for specialist travel books; or publish your work on-line.

A freelance journalist will get an idea, eg, "Exclusive 5 star resorts in the South Pacific",  will do some research and then pitch their idea to some publications.  Maybe "Island Holiday Magazine" or "Weekend Away for the Stinky Rich".  If the editor likes it, they will commision the story.  They will pay you a word rate for the completed story, photos if accepted will be paid seperately.  Then unfortunately the rest is up to you.  You pay flights,  accomodation, food, etc... :(   But luckily the resorts or their PR company or airlines or a Tourism Board will often provide this for free, they call it a "Famil".

Still..this way is lots of money up front, for very little payback.

The next way is to be a full-time journalist.  So go to journalism school or become a cadet in a newspaper.  Work your way up through the ranks doing boring stories about car crashes,  until the editor says,  why don't you go away on this 5 star holiday that the newspaper pays for, and then come back and write a story!   You can imagine, you need to have a lot of seniority at a paper before this is likely to happen.  let us know in twenty years if you were successful.

You could work for the travel guides.  My experience is with friends working for "Lonely Planet".  Their modus operandi, is to pay "stringers",  who will basically take a holiday, and spend lots of time checking facts (Is the Fandango guest house still operating out of 4456 Vine Street.)  The payment they make will basically cover your holiday, and they keep all the rights to your book.

Or you could publish on-line.  Not much money here I'm afraid.  You might be able to score some "Famils" to make your holiday cheaper,  but you might not find it a holiday to be marched around by some PR queen and to spend all your spare time with other travel journalists.

I don't think Travel agents travel much for their work.  They get cheap holidays, which are tax deductible, so thats good, I suppose.   But I expect most of their time is spent sitting at a desk booking other peoples holidays.
