  1. say you wanted to divide this

       785 divided by 5

well you would draw that little box and the number you wanted to divide would go on the inside and the number you are dividing by would go on the outside.

next you would first see how many times 5 (the number your dividing by) goes into the first number which is 7. It goes in once so you need to write a one on top of the seven. multiply 1x5=5 and write that beneath the 7. subtract the 5 (the product of 1x5) from the seven to get 2. then draw an arrow down from the 8 and write an eight next to the 2. repeat the first steps until you cant bring any more numbers down. so 5 goes into 28 5 times so you write the five above the eight and multiply 5 times 5 to get 25. subtract that from 28 and you get 3. bring down the last 5. 5 goes into 35 7 times. write a 7 above the 5. 5 times 7 is 35 and 35 minus 35 is 0. So your final answer will be 157.

Oh yeah if you cant bring down any more numbers and there is still a number left other then 0 at the bottom then that is your remainder. Hope I helped! :)

    5)785

    - 5

        28

    -  25

          35

         -35

            0

thats the best picture I can get sorry. not very good but oh well.

  2. your example is 34 into 44557. put 34 on the outside of the box and 44557 on the inside of the box. start with the first part of the larger number that the smaller one can go into. 34 can go into 44 one time. so you put a one on top of the 44. now you multiply the number on top with the outside number and put the answer under the 44. 34 x 1 = 34. so put 34 under the 44 and subtract. your remainder is 10. now bring down the next number from inside the box and put it on the end of the remainder. 10 with a 5 on the end makes 105. now, how many times can 34 go into 105. 3 times. so put 3 on top above the first 5. again multiply that 5 times the outside number 34. answer- 102. subtract that from 105. that gives you remainder 3. now bring down the next number and put it on the end of the 3. 5. by putting the 5 after the 3. you make the number 35. how many times does 34 go into this. 1. so put the one on the top above the 2nd 5. and multiply 1 x 34= 34. put the 34 on the bottom and bring down the 7. since 34 cannot go into 17,put a zero above the 7. your final answer is 131 remainder 17

  3. Go watch this You Tube video -- it does a pretty good job.

  4. This is not going to be easy without being able to write it out for you, but I'll try.

       Let's divide 12 into 366

Imagine that I have the number 12  on the outside of the division box and the 376 inside.  First you divide 12 into 37 (the first two numbers that it can go into).  The answer is three, so put the number three on the line directly above the 7.  12 x 3 = 36, so put 36 under the 37.  Now subtract 37 - 36, put the equals line under the 36 and write the answer, 1, under the 6.     Now, bring down the 6 from the 376 to make 16.

Now divide 12 into 16 and you get 1, so put the 1 on the top of the division sign, right next to the 3.  So far you have 31 on the top of the division sign.  Multiply the 1 x 12.  Put your answer under the 16.  16 - 12 = 4.    Now you have a remainder (4), so you want to add a decimal point and a zero (376.0).     Bring the zero down so the 4 becomes 40.  12 goes into 40 3 times, so put a 3 after the decimal point.  You now have 31.3 on top of your dividing line.      Multiply 3 x 12 and put your answer under the 40 and subtract.  (40-36 = 4).  Add another 0 after 376.0 so you have 376.00.  Do what you've been doing.  You realize that it's going to continue with a remainder of 4.  Don't go any farther than two decimal points.  Your answer is 31.33

        Did that help?

Oh my gosh! I went through all that and there's a video of it on You tube??  Sheesh!
